From sixteen charter Scouts in 1979 to a unified family troop for boys and girls in Walnut Creek.
Troop 832 was originally founded in Walnut Creek, California in September 1979 under founding Scoutmaster Dick Krieger. Sixteen original members formed the charter troop: Jeff Kimball, Dave Lindsay, Bruce Hahn, Hal Weck, Tim Kimball, Eric Glasser, Mike Giomi, Mark Chuberka, Ross Pirkle, Dave Witt, Mark Daniels, Jeff Keys, Tom Krieger, Blair Stientjes, Greg Hurlbut, and Rudy Oest. Original charter members Jeff Kimball and Bruce Hahn were Eagle Scouts.
From 1979 until 2016, the unit was chartered by The Parents of Troop 832 and met at Valle Verde Elementary School within the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council. In 2016, the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek became the troop's chartered organization, and in September 2017 the troop moved its weekly meetings from Valle Verde Elementary School to Northgate High School.
Guided by youth leadership, the Patrol Leaders' Council voted unanimously in May 2015 to register Troop 832 with Scouts for Equality. In 2019, the troop welcomed young women by launching linked unit Troop 832G alongside Troop 832B, joined the newly merged Golden Gate Area Council in 2020, and converted into a unified Scouting America family unit in 2026.
Key charter milestones, meeting homes, and service traditions that have shaped Troop 832 in Walnut Creek since 1979.
Troop 832 is founded in Walnut Creek, California under original Scoutmaster Dick Krieger, chartered by The Parents of Troop 832 within the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council and meeting at Valle Verde Elementary School. Sixteen charter Scouts sign the September 30, 1979 founding roster, including charter Eagle Scouts Jeff Kimball and Bruce Hahn.
Troop 832 Life Scout Trevor Tonsing passes away at age 16 from congenital heart disease and receives the posthumous Spirit of the Eagle Award. His planned Eagle Scout project making handmade fleece blankets for young patients at Children's Hospital Oakland inspires Trevor's Eagle Blanket Foundation, starting Troop 832's annual December blanket-making service day with senior residents at The Kensington in Walnut Creek.
By unanimous vote of the youth Patrol Leaders' Council, Troop 832 registers with Scouts for Equality, affirming that all youth, families, and adult leaders are welcome in the troop regardless of background, belief, or orientation.
After more than three decades chartered by The Parents of Troop 832, the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek becomes Troop 832's chartered organization in 2016, with Mike Lommel serving as the first Rotary Chartered Organization Representative from 2016 to 2017.

Paul Howett becomes Scoutmaster in January 2026 as Mike Stanton transitions to Assistant Scoutmaster. On March 7, 2026, Golden Gate Area Council honors Committee Chair Jennifer Stanton with the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth, and Angelo Bell, Simon Keese, and Trent Stanton achieve the Eagle Scout rank in 2026.
Earning the Eagle Scout rank requires years of outdoor skill mastery, troop leadership, and planning and leading a lasting community service project in Walnut Creek and the East Bay.
An active Troop 832 Life Scout who passed away in December 2009 at age 16, Trevor was posthumously awarded the Spirit of the Eagle Award.
